Joan Black, MS, CCC-SLP

Joan Black, MS, CCC - SLP is a highly respected speech and language pathologist and instructor in the top rated Southern Connecticut State University Speech and Language Pathology Program, where she brings decades of clinical experience, mentorship and innovative teaching to future clinicans.


Joan is widely recognized for her expertise in working with clients with Autism, complex medical diagnoses, Gestalt Language Processing and her ability to support clients of all ages who communicate through scripts, echolalia or other gestalt - based patterns.

Joan has extensive experience working with individuals with autism, apraxia, sensory and regulatory challenges, developmental delays, and complex communication needs. She blends evidence - based methods with a compassionate, indivdulaized approach that helps clients progress from early gestalt stategies to self-generated, meaningful language. Her work is grounded in respect, connection and truly understanding how each client communicates.

Joan's teaching style reflects the same philosophy she brings to clinical work. She is known for her compassion, depth of knowledge and incredible dedication to her profession, clients and students. Joan wants to shape thoughtful, ethical, skilled and well rounded clinicians to help 

Beyond her university and clinical work, Joan continues to mentor fellow clinicians, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and avdvocates for neurodiversity affirming therapy models that honor each person's strengths and communication style.

In her free time, Joan enjoys spending time with family and friends, creating balance in her life and bringing that grounded, joyful presence into all of her professional roles.
