Understanding Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Exploring Therapeutic Approaches

EDS is a connective tissue disorder.

Connective tissue is found throughout the body, where it provides support, protection and structure to other parts of the body. Connective tissue disorders are caused by issues that prevent connective tissue from functioning properly. Collagen is the primary component of connective tissues. Different types of collagens are associated with different functions. The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are caused by changes in the genes that affect collagen and related connective tissue proteins. 

What are the signs and symptoms of EDS?

Each type of EDS is associated with different characteristics. Some symptoms are common in all types of EDS. These include joint hypermobility, pain and fatigue. But symptoms vary with every patient. Comorbid medical conditions often seen with patients with EDS include dysautonomia, mast cell diseases, migraine and fibromyalgia. 

How many different types of EDS are there?

Currently, there are 13 different types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Each type has it's own genetic cause and results in unique features. The most common is Hypermobility (hEDS), followed by Classical (cEDS) and Vascular (vEDS). 

What treatments are there for patients wtih EDS?

Therapeutic approaches aim to manage symptoms and improve quality of life for individuals with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. There is no cure for EDS currently. At  High Quality Home Therapy we offer therapies specific for patients with EDS.
